Our fundamental nature has always been intertwined with concepts like the relativity theory, the search for the top quark in quantum mechanics, and the solitary spin of pulsars in the depths of space. This exploration was inspired by Tatlin’s 'Monument to the Third International,' leading to reflections on the Penion maximus, a structure akin to a mid-century listening device designed for discreetly observing public activity from a private standpoint. Mona Hatoum's 1996 'Quarters,' featuring orderly rows of beds in regimented environments, further informs this idea, emphasizing the surveillance and spatial fixation of individuals. Corridors, often found in spaces such as prisons or boarding schools, serve as public areas for convenient surveillance. These corridors, empty from horizon to horizon, evoke a sense of being at either the end of everything or the beginning of a significant reconstruction.
The 'AI Baby' symbolizes humanity's fascination with creating lifelike forms from nonliving matter. It acts as a cautionary emblem, highlighting that the conception and development of Artificial Intelligence should prioritize understanding over application. This mirrors the initial stages of children's sensorimotor development, where actions are driven by an inherent joy of power, rather than by imitation or cultural conditioning.
The artwork also features elements from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), emphasizing the critical task of collecting ecological data from various ecosystems. This is visually represented through neon lights, which convert the space into an immersive, sensory experience. The concept of 'neon guts' metaphorically illuminates the diverse outcomes of this ecological investigation.
